At ARK we currently have 5 rabbits looking for new homes. Rabbits make a great pet as they are quiet, easy to take care of and can be litter-box trained. They will generally live 5-10 years and sometime up to 15 years of age. Feeding: Special rabbit pellets should be available at all times and can be purchased at any pet shop, store it in the fridge for freshness but discard after 2 months. Always have fresh water available and change it daily. Provide hay everyday, the best type is alfalfa hay. Carrot tops and apples can be given but should only account for 10% of the total food intake per day. A small amount of plain yogurt can be given to line the inside walls of the stomach and intestine. Vitamin supplements should not be given. An indoor cage big enough for the rabbit to hop a few times should be sufficient, try not to use wire for the cage floor as it can damage the rabbit's feet. You must watch out for overgrown nails and teeth so clip often, bring it to the vet if necessary. Brush daily to prevent hairballs, pineapple is a good remedy to dissolve swallowed hair. Never pick up the rabbit by its ears, be gentle and don't try to overpower a struggling rabbit as fracture and dislocations are a common occurrences in rabbits. Male rabbits should especially be castrated as they may tend to be aggressive if you have more than one rabbit.
