Hamsters are generally very clean animals living up to 2-3 years of age. Special care for handling the animal should be mentioned, pick up using both your hands and never stroke it or attempt to pick it up suddenly or from the top as they will get surprised and will bite in this case. However, if handled frequently and gently from a young age, hamsters seldom bite. Hamsters do come down with several illnesses such as injury from falling or being dropped, teeth problems, cancer, diarrhoea, and some parasites. It is difficult to notice a hamster in need of medical attention as they are mostly active at night, if you notice anything strange about your hamster bring it to the vet for a check up. The most important thing is the hamsters cage, deep bedding and lots of nesting material should be provided, cages should have a solid floor and make sure there are no small openings anywhere as hamsters have a knack for escaping! Hamsters should be kept warm and dry. Food and water must be available at all times, hamster food can be purchased at any pet store. Include small amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables but make sure you wash it thoroughly to remove pesticides and bacteria. Other kinds of treats can be given occasionally, such as, whole wheat bread, cooked chicken, cheese and sugar-free cereals.
