FIE is equivalent to canine parvovirus, it has similar symptoms and the result is also the same. It is an extremely contagious disease and can be fatal in young kittens, although cats of all ages can be infected. Once a cat is infected, deterioration is rapid, the cat will become very depressed and go off its food. However, if food and water is taken in, it is often vomited and sever diarrhoea is common. The disease is spread through direct contact with infected cats or its faeces and it is an extremely difficult disease to treat, if the cat does recover, it will never completely regain full health. If you notice your cat is infected please take it to the vet immediately for hospitalisation, throw away any bedding used on the cat and disinfect your house. Do not introduce another cat for a couple of months.
