Canine parvovirus was one of the first major killer virus that was recorded to have caused many deaths in dogs. It is spread through direct contact with infected dogs or its faeces. The virus can survive in the environment for many months so it is important to disinfect your house before introducing a new dog and ideally throw away any bedding used on an infected dog. Parvovirus is most dangerous because it can infect any dog at any age but is often fatal in young dogs causing vomiting, fever, severe and often bloody diarrhoea. Treatment is usually done by administering intravenous fluid and antibiotics, hospitalisation is required, some dogs do recover but it is both time consuming and an expensive process.
