Canine distemper often causes death or permanent disability in young, unvaccinated puppies. It was known to be the number one killer disease amongst puppies, but it is less common now thanks to a vaccine. It is spread by direct contact of an infected dog by coughing, sneezing or sharing bowls. Signs of canine distemper are fever, runny eyes and nose, dry coughing, depression and listlessness. Extreme cases of infection show the dog worsen, becoming weak, beginning to shake or tremble, experience seizures, confusion and convulsions, eventually may lead to death. Treatment includes, intravenous fluids and antibiotics, unfortunately there is no medication available to kill the virus and treatment is usually unsuccessful. The best way to protect your dog is to get it vaccinated. Please make note that you must wait at least one month to bring an unvaccinated dog into your home where an infected dog was present. Disinfect bedding by washing it in bleach.
